Pat Major, the daughter of Edward and Ann Major, grew up with one brother, Edward, in the Bronx. Pat and Bob Dineen formed a partnership, and moved to Los Angeles for a year, to train with coach Jean Westwood. Returning to New York, they married in 1958, and continued to compete in national silver dance—winning the bronze in 1959 and the U.S. silver dance title in 1960. Bob and Pat continued to train for the 1961 competitive season, even though she gave birth to their son, Robert Dineen, Jr., the summer of 1960. Working with coaches Sonya Klopfer Dunfield and Ron Ludington, Bob and Pat placed third in gold dance at the 1961 Nationals, and earned a berth on the 1961 U.S. World Figure Skating Team. When they flew to Prague, they left the care of their son with Bob’s brother Ben Dineen.
