Ray Hadley Jr., born in 1943, was the child of Ray and Bette Hadley. “Ray” was the maiden name of their paternal grandmother. Their parents met through roller skating, and taught them both roller and ice skating in Oregon. After the family moved to Seattle in 1951, their parents divorced and Ray was awarded custody. Ila Ray was eleven and Ray Jr. was ten when their father married Linda Hart in 1954. Linda was their pairs coach and both parents coached them in singles and dance. They trained at the Seattle Civic Center Arena, the Tacoma rink, the Ballard rink, an outdoor rink in Yakima, and in time, the Hadley & Hart Ice Studio in 1960.
